Wondering where your stimulus rebate direct deposit is?

May 5, 2008 · Filed Under Money · Comment

Turns out the IRS left out a few details when telling people that if they received their tax return via direct deposit, they would get the rebate in the same fashion. Not so fast! If you used Turbo Tax Online, you will be receiving a paper check. Same for those that used services like H&R Block Rapid Refund. Because your tax refunds are sent to a bank different than your own first to handle the filing fees, then to your account, the IRS has decided that they would not be able to deposit to your bank.

This sucks for many out there, including me :(

From the Turbo Tax website:

What if I paid to file my 2007 taxes with my refund money using Santa Barbara Bank & Trust?

Even if you have received or will receive your tax refund by direct deposit to your bank account via Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, the IRS will not do the same for your tax rebate. It will mail your rebate instead.

This applies only to TurboTax customers who used the “refund transfer” with SBB&T when filing. This service lets you pay for your tax preparation and/or e-filing from your refund proceeds, for an additional fee, rather than use a credit card.

When TurboTax customers chose this payment method, they authorized the bank to set up temporary accounts to be used only to receive their 2007 refunds from the IRS. The IRS sends the refunds to the temporary accounts and the bank transmits them directly to customers.

Because the IRS does not in fact receive taxpayers bank-account numbers under this method, it cannot match taxpayers with their current bank accounts.

That’s why the IRS decided that taxpayers who entered into financial transactions with third parties, such as SBB&T, would get rebates by mail. This also applies to taxpayers who used “refund anticipation loans” or RALs (loans made to tax filers against their expected refunds). TurboTax does not offer RALs.

I have found the worst newspaper web design, and it’s almost in our back yard!

St. Mary’s Today

Wow…just wow. And this was an upgrade over their old design, which they still make available in case their readers are feeling nostalgic.

To their credit, they are at least attempting to produce an RSS feed for their site, even though it doesn’t work. That’s more than we can say about some other local papers…

thanks to O’Malley Watch for the link.

Could we see more fast food restaurants in Harford County…

…because New Jersey is considering imposing a “sin Tax” on fast food. Could this serve as motivation for those Ft. Monmouth employees who are on the fence about relocating to our area? If so, the increased demand may finally land us our first Sonic!!!

From the article:

Still, some say taxing fast food isn’t such a bad idea.

“I think this country has gone too much in the direction of fast and unhealthy food, and if people are taxed they may terminate that and turn toward more healthy foods,” said West Orange resident Maureen Felix.

Roger Clemens vs. John Daly in a Cage Match - Who Would Win?

May 1, 2008 · Filed Under World of Sports · Comment

Seems that in addition to messing around with 15-year-old country singers and bartenders, Roger Clemens has also been linked to the ex-wife of pro golfer John Daly.

Reporters were finally able to track Daly down on the golf course for comment. Here are some pictures from the interview: (For the full video, check it out here.)

Well, they really didn’t interview him about the Clemens’ situation, but after seeing Daly’s physique and athletic ability, do you think he would have a chance in the cage against a steriod-free clemens?

Reason #5823 not to be mean to your teachers…

…because they might sue you.

That’s what is happening to a few Dartmouth students that evidently pissed off their lecturer. Below is an email the teacher, Priya Venkatesan, sent her class:

Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:56:35
From: Priya Venkatesan
Subject: WRIT.005.17.18-WI08: Possible lawsuit

Dear former class members of Science, Technology and Society:

I tried to send an email through my server but got undelivered messages. I regret to inform you that I am pursuing a lawsuit in which I am accusing some of you (whom shall go unmentioned in this email) of violating Title VII of anti-federal discrimination laws.

The feeling that I am getting from the outside world is that Dartmouth is considered a bigoted place, so this may not be news and I may be successful in this lawsuit. I am also writing a book detailing my eperiences as your instructor, which will “name names” so to speak. I have all of your evaluation and these will be reproduced in the book.

Have a nice day.
